the summer of 1980, Lani Ka'ahumanu and her friend Phil* left
the cafeteria around 9 P.M. and headed back to Lani's cabin. The two
employees at the Village of Oz resort had wrapped up another in-depth
conversation about feminism. As the two walked among oak trees and the dry
hills of Northern California, Lani announced, "I want to sleep with you."
Phil, who assumed Lani wanted to continue their conversation into the late
hours of the night, offered to go fetch his sleeping bag. "No, I want to
sleep with you." Lani, the outspoken lesbian activist from San Francisco,
desired something most lesbians do not: a man.
