Image: Illustration of couple In the summer of 1980, Lani Ka'ahumanu and her friend Phil* left the cafeteria around 9 P.M. and headed back to Lani's cabin. The two employees at the Village of Oz resort had wrapped up another in-depth conversation about feminism. Phil, who assumed Lani wanted to continue their conversation into the late hours of the night, offered to go fetch his sleeping bag. "No, I want to sleep with you." Lani, the outspoken lesbian activist from San Francisco, desired something most lesbians do not: a man.
