Past the sign in Oregon’s Willamette National Forest that reads FALL CREEK CAMPING LIMIT 14 DAYS, the logging roads narrow and the trees get taller. Pink and blue yarn mark the trail to the Red Cloud Thunder campsite, also known as “Ewok Village.” Through the dense branches, Craig, a 25-year-old activist, appears. Rain gets caught in his brown dreadlocks, slides down his neck and through his clothes. He deftly climbs and crawls through a maze of giant logs and massive tree trunks dripping with moss. Craig points at his frayed, mud-caked clothes and his infected right thumb, and says he hasn’t felt dry—or clean—in weeks.
