Autumn DePoe, a 22-year-old college student, says she began wearing makeup to conceal her low self-esteem. Despite her lithe 5’10’’ figure, DePoe did not have confidence in her appearance. With makeup, she could transform herself into the pretty, normal girl she wanted to be. Without the mask, DePoe felt her insecurities showed. But she never felt the empowerment or pleasure that makeup advertisements promised. It took seven years and several hundred dollars for DePoe to realize that makeup couldn’t provide those things.
