FLUX 2002
Call for Query Letters

Deadline: Feb. 28, 2002

FLUX, the magazine written, edited, designed and produced by UO journalism students, announces a call for query letters. Any journalism student interested in writing a story for Flux 2002 must turn in a query letter proposing the story idea to the editors.

THEME FOR FLUX 2002: "Nature & Culture: Traditional Communities in Transition."

Requirements: Query letters are written and addressed like any business letter. They should be single-spaced, no longer than two pages, and contain the following:

Tips: See the Flux 2002 Bulletin online at http://influx.uoregon.edu/bulletin.html

Be sure to read past issues of Flux to get an idea of the kinds of stories the magazine usually contains. In the query letter, don’t just tell us what your story is about; tell the editor what your story "is." Take the editor to the location of your story. Paint a picture. Make it come alive. A common tip often applied to magazine writing is "show, don’t tell." This applies to query letters as well. Editors aren’t impressed when you tell them your story idea is "incredible" or that your character is "amazing." If you reveal your characters and story in the query, the editors will come to the conclusion themselves. "Demonstrate" that your story is compelling.

The story proposal may be based on a story written for a UO journalism class. If you have a draft of the story that’s in good shape, include it with your query. Stories must be written in final form by the second week of spring term, and preferably by the last week of winter term. You may include no more than two clips of published stories or copies of class assignments that demonstrate your ability to write the story you are proposing. Authors may be asked to pitch their stories in person to the Flux editorial board. Submit your query letters to the Flux mailbox in the Duniway Center in Allen Hall.
