A Group Effort

by Kelly L. Walker last modified 2009-04-30 14:14

On Sunday April 12, I planted three varieties of open-pollinated bush bean seeds in pots and placed them at the Allen Hall journalism school. Beside them sit the starts of red celery and strawberries. Unless the cold weather that struck early in the week was detrimental, the bean sprouts should appear within a few days.

This project will be documented to accompany a story I'm writing for Flux, but it's also designed to encourage interactivity. The sprouts project is collaborative, from the several staffers who helped me carry the pots out, to the many who will likely contribute to watering, to an eventual staff meal featuring the fruits of our labor. The harvest, of course, may come after this issue is published. The carryover will coincide with a move to biannual production and the continued regular update of Flux online. I may not be present to enjoy the food, but I'll watch for the blogs as a new graduate and experienced Flux reader and fan. Flux staff, as they continue to come and go, will be able to take part more than ever in Flux's past and future.

The project will also be followed in my blogs for readers to participate in as well. Flux, I hope, will continue to become more of a conversation than an announcement online. Blogs will contribute to this effort by informing regular readers, and welcoming guest writers and constant feedback. They will give readers a glimpse into the triumphs and challenges behind the making of an evolving publication with a great history.
