A Joy and a Grief

Finishing "I am Myself" leaves me both restless and relieved.

A Joy and a Grief

An avid hip-hop dancer, Jake gave Taimi and me tips to improve our dance moves.

Now that my editors have made their final edits and Flux is on its way, I find myself simultaneously restless and relaxed. There's a joy and grief that comes with the completion of a story. As my fellow journalist Taimi, a multimedia editor, wrote to me last week: "I just finished my last interview with Jake and I'm really sad. He's so great and I loved having him be a part of my life for that time." Despite the intense and trying moments of this story, I share Taimi's sentiments. The past five months of reporting, writing, editing and collaborating with my fellow journalists on the "I am Myself" story has transformed and challenged me tremendously. I have never spent so much time with a story subject or learned so much from my time with the person. I have never contemplated ethical dilemmas in such depth or found myself struggling with the balance of being a human and being a consummate journalist. In three weeks I'll depart from the University hoping that Jake's story moves people and helps them to better understand issues pertaining to the transgender community. I'll also walk away confident that because of Jake's courage and leadership ability, the University has and will continue to become a more open and inclusive place.
