Where o where will magazines go?
What is the future of the magazine industry?
With graduation soon approaching, I am glad to announce to many friends, relatives customers and randoms that I will soon be finishing school with a major in magazine journalism. I get mixed reactions. Either a "congratualtions, what a cool major!" Or a "Aren't magazines all going online now?"
The people asserting that my future in magazine looks bleak light an editorial fire inside me. While we are constantly hearing reports on how newspapers are folding due to people using the Internet for their information, i still have hope for our glossies. To get the jist of a newspaper article, you only need to read the first few graphs. This is why we are all looking at headlines with a two line description on our Google homepage. Plus, newspapers are a total pain to read -- I never acquired the skills of unfolding and refolding that giant beast.
Magazines have in depth features that surpass 2,500 words. They also contain beautiful photographs shot by some of the best photographers in the world. I would hate to read thousand of words on a small, bright computer screen, and looking at a photograph online is not the same as holding it in front of you. I love having tangible magazines. I throw about three in my bag on my way to work, rip pages out of fashion magazines that inspire me and almost never explore their online editions.
I know that Flux is making a huge effort this year to go online. I don't want to bash the idea, but for now I'm going to stay old fashioned and keep buying my magazines from my local bookstore.
