A BRIEF HISTORY OF FLUX

In 1993, the School of Journalism and Communication began publishing Flux. Since then, it has repeatedly proven itself to be one of the most engaging, impressive, and admired student magazines in the country. Flux has won numerous national and regional awards for writing, design, and overall quality — a complete listing of which is available at the InFlux site. The magazine’s success is a testimonial to the students who produce it, to the School of Journalism and Communication, and to the University of Oregon.

Flux has two principal missions. It tests the lessons that students have learned throughout the journalism school’s curriculum and provides them with hands-on experience in actual magazine production. The magazine’s other primary objective is to provide a showcase for student journalism. Clips from Flux can be valuable additions to the portfolios of staff members or freelancers, and a student’s name on the masthead is an equally desirable addition to any student’s resume.

InFlux, the World Wide Web companion to Flux magazine, debuted in 1997 and was immediately applauded for both content and design. The first installment of InFlux won a coveted award for site design from HotWired magazine. We expect the site to develop considerably in the years ahead.
